Best Editing
A Hard Day’s Night* - Dune - The Father - Last Night in Soho - Tongues Untied
A Hard Day’s Night
Credit has to be given to the film that literally invented the music video.
Dune
I’m often more impressed by a film’s editing when I don’t think about once during my viewing, and that was the case during this sprawling sci-fi epic (no small feat). The film ran smooth and crisp, bringing me into the story without making me question the journey.
The Father
Editing is a tool that’s wholly unique to cinema. That’s why it’s hard for me to imagine the original stage-play version of The Father existing without the perfectly nauseating editing that gives the viewer the same mental experience as the titular character.
Last Night in Soho
Edgar Wright knows how to edit a movie. Watching him bring his unique flair (melding music, color, and motion in a way only he seems to be capable of) to a horror film was a welcome viewing experience
Tongues Untied
The cuts are percussive and poetic, matching the speed and power of the film. It’s lyrical in how it moves, carrying you to the very end.
Best Original Score
BATMAN (1989)* - THE FOUNTAIN - ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE - SPENCER - THE SWIMMER
Batman (1989)
Danny Elfman’s epically iconic score has not only become
synonymous with the title character, but recognizable through cultural osmosis. The main theme ranks up there with Indiana Jones and Jaws as a stepping stone in influential film music.
The Fountain
One amazing thing that music can do is make a movie feel grander than it would otherwise, which Clint Mansell’s gorgeous score does for The Fountain. This film takes place over the course of thousands of years across time and space, and the music evokes such a grand scale with it’s heavy use of stringed instruments like in the track “Death is the Road to Awe,” and creates ethereal, otherworldly rippling sounds like in the track “Stay With Me.” The music of The Fountain is so good that it makes me think that it’s a better movie than it really is.
Only Lovers Left Alive
The grungy, psychedelic infused album from the band SQURL (composed for the film) uniquely suits Jim Jarmusch’s tale of a depressed rocker vampire and his lover. There are hints of Middle Eastern flare throughout the tracks, giving it a rustic feel. This is an album I could have heard and enjoyed without ever seeing the film.
